Are you planning an unforgettable adventure along the legendary Inca Trail to Machu Picchu? As a local guide with over 10 years of experience trekking these ancient routes, I’m sharing detailed information about the best times to undertake this incredible journey.

Season Overview

The climate in the Andean region of Cusco is primarily divided into two seasons:

  • Dry season (May to October)
  • Rainy season (November to April)

However, each month has unique characteristics that can make your experience different. Let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of each period.

Dry Season (May to October): The Most Popular Choice

May – June

  • Advantages: The landscape is incredibly green after the rainy season. Less crowded than July and August.
  • Disadvantages: Mornings and nights can be very cold (down to 32°F or 0°C).
  • Recommended for: Travelers looking for good weather but fewer crowds.

July – August

  • Advantages: Dry and stable weather. Sunny days with clear skies, perfect for photography.
  • Disadvantages: It’s the busiest season of the year. Permits sell out 6-8 months in advance.
  • Recommended for: Those who plan well ahead and prefer predictable weather.

September – October

  • Advantages: Fewer tourists than in July-August. Weather is still mostly favorable.
  • Disadvantages: Possibility of occasional rain toward the end of October.
  • Recommended for: Travelers who want to avoid crowds but enjoy good weather.

Rainy Season (November to April): For Adventurous Souls

November – December

  • Advantages: Nature begins to turn green again. Fewer tourists on the trails.
  • Disadvantages: Unpredictable rainfall, especially in the afternoons.
  • Recommended for: Travelers who don’t mind occasional rain and seek more tranquility.

January – February

  • IMPORTANT! The traditional Inca Trail closes in February for maintenance.
  • Advantages: Landscapes are at their greenest and most lush.
  • Disadvantages: It’s the rainiest time of year. Higher risk of landslides and cancellations.
  • Recommended for: Best to avoid these months for the Inca Trail. Consider alternative routes like Lares or Salkantay.

March – April

  • Advantages: Vegetation is incredibly green and flowery. Fewer tourists.
  • Disadvantages: Still frequent rains, though less intense than in January-February.
  • Recommended for: Those who appreciate nature at its fullest and are prepared for some rain.

My Recommendation as a Local Guide

If I’m asked for a personal recommendation after years of guiding the Inca Trail, I suggest May or September as the ideal months:

  • They offer an excellent balance between good weather and fewer tourists
  • The landscapes are green and beautiful
  • Temperatures are more moderate than during the peak of the dry season
  • Permits, although limited, are easier to secure than in July-August

Practical Tips Based on Season

For dry season:

  • Bring high-factor sunscreen (radiation is intense)
  • Include thermal layers for cold nights
  • Book 6-8 months in advance

For rainy season:

  • Bring a good waterproof poncho and protection for your backpack
  • Include an extra pair of socks and waterproof boots
  • Protect your camera from water
  • Book 3-4 months in advance (except high season)

Conclusion

There is no “perfect” season for all Inca Trail travelers. The best time will depend on your personal preferences:

  • If you prioritize stable, dry weather: choose between May and September
  • If you seek fewer tourists and don’t mind occasional rain: consider April, October, or November
  • If you want the greenest landscapes: March-April or November-December
  • If you’re planning with little advance notice: the rainy season offers more permit availability

Regardless of when you decide to do this wonderful trek, the experience of walking the same paths used by the Incas and arriving for the first time at the Machu Picchu citadel through the Sun Gate will simply be unforgettable.
