Itinerary

DAY 01: CUSCO – CLOUD FOREST – BAMBOO LODGE

  • [Early Morning] – [Andean Ascent & History]: We depart early from Cusco for an 8-hour approx. scenic drive in our private minibus, reaching heights of 3,900 masl (13,000 feet).
  • [Mid-Morning] – [Cultural Stops]: We make a brief stop at Ninamarca to marvel at ancient pre-Inca cemeteries, followed by a visit to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo.
  • [Afternoon] – [Cloud Forest Descent]: Descend the eastern slopes into a lush cloud forest. Keep your eyes peeled for ferns, orchids, and our bright red national bird, the Andean cock-of-the-rock, alongside playful woolly monkeys.
  • [Evening] – [Arrival at Bamboo Lodge]: Settle into your comfortable double room with a private bathroom at the Bamboo Lodge (700 masl). After dinner, enjoy an expert briefing for the next day’s adventure.

DAY 02: BAMBOO LODGE – ATALAYA PORT – DORADO LODGE

  • [Very Early] – [Journey to the Port]: After an early breakfast, we head to the port of Atalaya (600 masl). We will visit a rescue station and walk along the road seeking rare orchids, monkeys, and birds.
  • [Morning] – [Amazon Navigation]: Embark on an 8-hour approx. boat ride in a 15-meter motorized canoe along the Alto Madre de Dios River, entering the true lowland rainforest.
  • [Afternoon] – [Wildlife & Local Culture]: Spot Fasciated Tiger Herons, alligators, and various monkey species. We will also visit a local town to appreciate traditional rainforest lifestyles before arriving at Dorado Lodge.
  • [Night] – [Nocturnal Safari & Clay Lick]: Venture out on a thrilling night walk to spot frogs and snakes, culminating at the lodge’s main attraction: an active tapir clay lick.

DAY 03: DORADO ECOLOGICAL LODGE – CASA MATSIGUENKA

  • [Morning] – [Entering the Manu River]: Leave the Madre de Dios River behind and present our permits at the Limonal park ranger station. We then navigate for about 5 hours on the clay waters of the Manu River.
  • [Midday] – [Jaguar Territory]: This is the ultimate Extended Manu wildlife tour experience. Scan the sunny beaches for nesting birds, turtles, black and white alligators, and with luck, a majestic Jaguar resting by the water.
  • [Afternoon] – [Casa Matsiguenka Trails]: After a riverside lunch, arrive at the rustic Casa Matsiguenka, featuring exclusive trails and twin rooms with mosquito nets. Explore the pristine rainforest paths in the afternoon.
  • [Night] – [Optional Night Walk]: Choose to join an optional evening excursion to discover the jungle’s nocturnal creatures before resting in this indigenous-owned lodge.

ABOUT THE CASA MATSIGUENKA

The Casa Matsiguenka is designed using the indigenous people building techniques and counts on 12 fully screened twin rooms. Beds are furnished with mosquito nets. There is a private trail system and local Matsiguenka guides will accompany you on the trails (optional). There is an interactive interpretation center and locally made souvenirs are for sale.

DAY 04: CASA MATSIGUENKA LODGE – COCHA SALVADOR

  • [Morning] – [Giant Otter Safari]: Explore the calm waters of Cocha Salvador lake by canoe. We will quietly search for the endangered giant river otters, watching them fish and play in their natural habitat.
  • [Midday] – [Exotic Birdwatching]: Keep your camera ready for the Agami heron or the Sungrebe, while brown capuchin monkeys forage in the canopy above.
  • [Afternoon] – [Medicinal Plant Walk]: Walk the surrounding trails while your expert guide reveals the secrets of the ecosystem, pointing out medicinal plants and searching for wild peccary herds.
  • [Sunset] – [Jungle Dusk]: Enjoy the vibrant colors of an Amazonian sunset before returning to Casa Matsiguenka for a well-deserved rest.

DAY 05: CASA MATSIGUENKA LODGE – COCHA OTORONGO – DORADO ECOLOGICAL LODGE

  • [Early Morning] – [Primate Observation]: Head out for a quick forest walk to Cocha Otorongo, listening to the whispers of the jungle and looking for troops of Woolly and Black Spider Monkeys.
  • [Mid-Morning] – [Canopy Tower Views]: Climb the spectacular 20-meter observation tower overlooking the lake. This vantage point offers incredible chances to spot the resident giant otters and colorful birds.
  • [Afternoon] – [Return Navigation]: Begin our journey back, climbing the Alto Madre de Dios River.
  • [4:00 to 5:00 PM] – [Arrival at Dorado Lodge]: We will arrive back at El Dorado Lodge between 4:00 and 5:00 pm, where we will relax and spend the night.

DAY 06: DORADO LODGE – SOGA DE ORO LODGE

  • [Very Early] – [Eagle Sighting]: Start the day with a focused Manu birdwatching tour 8 days experience. We will explore around the lodge, hoping to spot the elusive Harpy Eagle in the dense canopy.
  • [Morning] – [Upstream Journey]: Board the motorized canoe for a 6-hour trip upstream towards our final jungle shelter, staying alert for wildlife surprised by our passing on the river beaches.
  • [Afternoon] – [Arrival & Relaxation]: Arrive at Soga de Oro Lodge, a strategically located haven perfect for observing the surrounding wildlife and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

DAY 07: PAITITI LODGE – TROCHA FELIPE – MACHUHUASI LAKE

  • [Morning] – [The Felipe Path]: Leave the lodge and hike the Felipe path, an excellent trail to encounter spider monkeys, brown capuchins, and woolly monkeys swinging through the trees.
  • [Afternoon] – [Machuwasi Catamaran Ride]: Visit the local conservation project at Machuwasi lake. We will navigate on catamarans, looking for capybaras, alligators, and the fascinating prehistoric-looking Hoatzin bird.
  • [Evening] – [Farewell Dinner]: Return to the Soga de Oro Lodge in time for a refreshing shower and dinner.
  • [Night] – [Final Jungle Walk]: If you still have energy, join an optional final night trail with your guide to bid farewell to the nocturnal wonders of the Amazon.

DAY 08: PAITITI LODGE – CLOUD FOREST – CUSCO

  • [Early Morning] – [Parrot Clay Lick]: Depart the lodge very early to witness the vibrant spectacle of a small parrot clay lick, full of noise and color.
  • [Morning] – [Return to Atalaya]: Arrive at Port Atalaya, where our private van will be waiting to begin the ascent back up into the Andes.
  • [Midday] – [Acjanaco Pass]: Cross back through the mystical Cloud Forest to reach Acjanaco, the highest point of our route, where we will stop to enjoy a comforting lunch.
  • [5:00 PM] – [Arrival in Cusco]: We continue our scenic drive, arriving in Cusco around 5:00 pm, dropping you off safely at or near your hotel.
