Sacsayhuaman is one of the most enigmatic and majestic constructions of the Inca Empire. Located just 2 km from Cusco, this ceremonial fortress surprises for its gigantic stones perfectly assembled. In this guide, we tell you its history, significance and everything you need to know to visit it.

Sacsayhuaman

What is Sacsayhuaman?

Meaning of the Name

  • Quechua: “Saqsay” (satiarse) + “waman” (falcon) → “Place where the falcon is satiated”.
  • The Spaniards believed that it meant “Fortress of the head”, because of its shape similar to the profile of a puma (sacred Inca animal).

Original Function

Although many call it a “fortress”, studies suggest that it was a ceremonial center dedicated to the cult of the sun (Inti) and important rituals.
