Colca Canyon Trek 2 Days and 1 Night
The World’s Deepest Canyon
This trek in Colca Canyon is highly recommendable: you have enough time to enjoy the views and going slow at times to take pictures. The level of this hiking is easy. The first day trek is around 3 ½ hours, the second day trek is 4 ½ hours and the last day 3 hours. The trail is downhill, flat and uphill, while altitudes vary from 3.300 untill 2.100 m.a.s.l. No acclimatization is necessary when you are coming from Arequipa , Puno, Cusco or even lower altitudes.
Itinerary
Day 1: AREQUIPA – CRUZ DEL CÓNDOR – SAN JUAN DE CHUCCHO – SANGALLE (OASIS)
You are picked up from your hotel by the tourist transport around 3:00 am. After about 3 hours we arrive at the town of Chivay, where we have breakfast. We continue another 1 1/2 hours to the Cruz del Condor, where we will stop to see the flight of the majestic Andean condor. About 15 minutes down from the Cruz del Condor we arrive to the San Miguel lookout point, near the village of Cabanaconde. We stop at the rim of the canyon to appreciate the spectacular views. Then we begin the zig-zag descent to the river, which takes 2-3 hours. On the other side of the river in San Juan de Chuccho we have lunch and some welcome relaxation. We carry on walking on the other side of the canyon, passing through idyllic countryside and the remote villages of Coshñirhua and Malata, before descending to the Sangalle (Oasis), where we stay the night. After arriving in the afternoon we can enjoy the swimming pool, with a water temperature of about 23 degrees Celcius.
Day 2: SANGALLE (OASIS) – CABANACONDE – CHIVAY – AREQUIPA
This day you need to wake up so early (4.30 a.m.), start the ascent of 3 hours to the left rim of Colca Canyon, to Cabanaconde (3280m). This day we walk up 1050m, for the last hard and steep trail of our trip. We will have the breakfast in Cabanaconde.
The tourist transport picks us up from the plaza in Cabanaconde between 9:00 and 9:30 am. We drive back towards Chivay, stopping at a lookout point to appreciate the complex pre-Incan terraces of the middle valley. In Yanque town we take a dip in the hotspring for 1 hour aprox.
We will have the lunch in Chivay and travel back 3 hours to Arequipa, along the way we will have a small stop to visit the (“Volcanoes Mirador” 4910 meter and the National Reserve). Natural habitat of South American camelids, vicuñas, llamas, alpacas and vizcachas. At 05:00 p.m., approx. Arrival at the White City of Arequipa.
For hikers thinking to continue with their travel to Puno or who wants to stay near the airport of Arequipa they need tell us at booking time to coordinate with the trek guide and driver.
