Local Trekkers Peru offers you the 5-day and 4-night camp in the Peruvian jungle through the depths of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, a formidable experience for nature lovers. This trip through mother jungle will be accompanied by many activities: jungle walks, observation of pink freshwater dolphins, canoe rides, night excursion to the swamps where the alligators rest, we will navigate the Amazon River, education on medicinal plants and more, besides visiting native Amazonian tribes.
We will leave very early from the city of Iquitos by private car that will take us to the port city of Nauta (1:30 hours). Where our breakfast awaits us. Then in a private boat we will travel upstream, we will see the spectacular union of 2 main rivers (Ucayali and Maranon) that then form the Amazon River. We will continue upriver until we reach the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve (50 miles to the SO / approximately 2 and a half hours from Nauta). Where we will register to enter the community of Arequipa where the first camp will be established, right here our lunch will be served. Then we will observe various species of birds along the way, egrets, hawks, screamers with horns, jacans, parrots and parakeets. It is also possible to see pink dolphins of the Amazon Rive. Arrived at sunset, we will have a canoe trip to see and catch alligators, we will have the opportunity to hold, touch and take pictures with the alligator. Then we will return to our camp for dinner and spend the night in the Pacaya Samiria Reserve.
We will have our breakfast early in the morning. Then we will navigate the Maranon River for 3 hours approx. until we reach our next destination (Lake Shansho Cocha area). While sailing upstream we can see a wide variety of wild animals; Primates, reptiles, turtles, birds, pink river dolphins and many other species of flora and fauna. When we arrive our lunch will be ready. The black waters of the rivers reflect the sky, clouds, vegetation, huge trees, that travelers have the feeling of traveling between mirrors; This is the reason why Pacaya Samiria is known as the 'jungle of mirrors'. In the afternoon we will go fishing; piranhas, sea bass and other fish species in the reserve. We will return to the camp for dinner. After dinner we will go on a night walk through nature to see what types of species can be seen (lizards, snakes, spiders, monkeys). And then we will rest again in our tents.
This day we will pack our things and sail upriver to the National Reserve through the Maranon River and entering the Yanayacu River (near the Vente de January town). While we sail animal waxes in their natural habitat, upon arrival at the camp and after eating our lunch we will walk through the jungle, where we can see more closely the large number of primates, reptiles, turtles, birds, pink dolphins, butterflies and many other species wild animals that interact in their natural habitat. Also on this day we will learn about various types of Amazonian plants such as the Ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi), the cat claw vine (uncaria tomentosa), Victoria Amazonica, ceiba tree, sensitive plant (mimosa pudica) and more. We can also perform a variety of activities; like trekking, canoeing, fishing and plant identification, animal watching or maybe just relaxing with a nice swim in one of the lagoons. After dinner, we will do a night boat excursion to look for the different species of nocturnal animals and hear the nocturnal sound of the jungle!.
After our early breakfast we will have a morning departure in our boat, then we will start going back down the river towards the city of Iquitos, while we watch the birds as they leave their nests to find their food in the river, including cotingas, macaws , parrots and Harpy (Harpia harpyja). Then excursion to the Yanaquillo stream where we will see squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis), saddle tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis) and sloths (Bradypus variegatus). Then we will stop and see the giant trees of Lupuna (Ceiba pentandra), Capirona and Capinuri (Heliocostilis scabra) and also striking birds such as the toucan (Pteroglossus), the red macaw (Ara macao), the blue and yellow macaw (Ara ararauna) , the common egret (Egreta alba) and the Amazonian kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona). After this time we will stop for lunch. Then continue with our tour of the Pacaya Samiria Reserve until night falls.
This day we will prepare for our last excursion IN the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. After our breakfast we will have our morning excursion, Then we will return to the camp to have lunch and pack our belongings and return to the city of Iquitos. During the boat trip back to Iquitos, you will have a great chance to see alligators, turtles, herons, pink dolphins, snakes and many other species of flora and fauna along the river bank. We will also visit the IIAP (Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazon), where you can visit manatees and freshwater dolphins that have been rescued from the Amazon and are being rehabilitated.
