Queshuachaca (in Quechua, Qichwachaka,) is a rope bridge built with plant fiber (ichu) found in the district of Quehue, province of Canas in the department of Cuzco at 3700 meters above sea level crossing the Apurimac river. The existence of this bridge dates from Inca times and its maintenance and renovation is carried out through a rite performed by the communities of Huinchiri, Chaupibanda, Ccollana Quehue and Choccayhua.1 The bridge is 28 meters long and 1.20 meters wide, its structure is basically made of long strips of braided ichu. In Inca times these bridges were made entirely of ichu and logs tied to a stone structure that was specially made to support the bridge; Every one or two years, the ichu and wood parts were renewed, advised by an Inca specialist (mitimae). There are chronicles that indicate that these bridges were repaired very quickly during the Inca period. These structures did not lose their validity in the colonial period, since they were more resistant to earthquakes than stone structures.
