TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE + MACAW CLAY LICK 6D/5N
Tambopata National Reserve is a Peruvian nature reserve located in the southeastern region of Madre de Dios. It was established on September 4,2000; by decree of President Alberto Fujimori. The reserve protects several ecosystems of the tropical rainforest for the preservation of such forest and the sustainable use of forest resources by the peoples around the reserve. Tambopata National Reserve is located south of the Madre de Dios river, in the province of Tambopata, region of Madre de Dios. It reaches the border with Bolivia to the east and borders with Bahuaja Sonene National Park to the south. The area consists of forested hills and plains, with elevations ranging from 200 to 400 m above sea level. The area presents swamps, oxbow lakes and meandering rivers; the main rivers in the reserve being the Tambopata, Malinowski and Heath rivers. Vascular plants are represented in the reserve by 1713 species in 145 families. Among the mammal species found in the reserve are: the jaguar, the puma, the ocelot, the collared peccary, the giant otter, the Peruvian spider monkey, the jaguarundi, Hoffmanns two-toed sloth, the capybara, the tufted capuchin, the white-lipped peccary, the marsh deer, the red brocket, the brown-throated sloth, the black-capped squirrel monkey, the South American tapir, etc. Some species of birds present in the reserve are: the harpy eagle, the white-necked jacobin, the scarlet macaw, the rufescent tiger heron, the king vulture, the roseate spoonbill, the crested eagle, the razor-billed curassow, the blue and yellow macaw, the variegated tinamou, the sunbittern, the red and green macaw, the horned curassow, the golden tailed sapphire, etc. Come with us and discover this amazing area of the planet full of live, with us you will have a great service and you will not regret.
DAY 01: PUERTO MALDONADO – WALK INSIDE THE JUNGLE – MALOKA LODGE.
Upon arrival to Puerto Maldonado, one of our staff will greet you at the airport or bus station and will bring you to our central office in downtown Puerto Maldonado. There you will be able to repack your bags and drop off luggage that you will not need during your stay at the lodges. We will depart from Puerto Capitania, the local port, and will travel downriver for 45 minutes by motor boat before reaching Port Sandoval, the entrance to Lake Sandoval and the Tambopata National Reserve. To get to Lake Sandoval, we will have to walk 3 Km or about an hour (muddy in the wet season) to arrive at a small port, from which we will take a row boat for 30 minutes in order to reach to our Lodge. Once we arrive, we will receive a warm welcome with a flavorful tropical juice and after a brief introduction to the lodge, we will rest in our comfortable rooms. After lunch we will do activities with a lot of adrenaline such as canopy brige walk and ziplining. Once the sun sets, we will take a night walk equipped with a flashlight or head lamp to search for the night monkeys (Musmuqui), frogs, snakes and insects that are active during the night. Afterwards, we will return to the lodge for a delicious dinner and to spend the night.

DAY 02: LAKE SANDOVAL – GIANT RIVER OTTERS – CAIMAN SEARCH NIGHT.
Very early in the morning, we will roe around Lake Sandoval in a wooden canoe in search of the giant river otters (the biggest in the world), one of the most important protected species in the lake and considered flagship species. Giant otters live in small and very territorial family groups and feed on fish around the lake in the early morning. They can eat up to 4 kilos of fish a day. We will return to the lodge for breakfast and take a brief rest. After breakfast, we will leave the lodge and will go for a walk in the terra firme forest learning about the medicinal plants, diurnal mammals such as monkeys, wild cats, peccaries and birds such as toucans and macaws. We will also learn about the ecology of the Brazil nut tree or chestnut tree that is considered an umbrella species, as it helpit helps protect other flora and fauna that inhabit the region. We will return to the lodge for lunch and s short nap. In the afternoon, we will canoe aroun Lake Sandoval to look for monkeys (cappuccinos, squirrels and red howler), and various birds such as herons, kingfishers, cormorants, and shanshos that live and feed in the forest around the lake. In the evening, on our way back to the lodge, using our flashlingts we will be able to see the reflection of the eyes of the black caimans that usually hunt at night along the shore of the lake. We will approach them to take photos and we will take about their natural history. We will return to the Lodge for dinner and to spend the night.

DAY 04: LAKE SANDOVAL – TAMBOPATA MACAW CLAY LICK.
This day we are going to change our lodge, for what after our breakfast we will take a boat and we will travel along the Tambopata River until to get to our next lodge, during the boat ride we can observe the wildlife around the river banks, especially birds such as herons a jabiru, maybe some macaws, kingfishers, and some mammals, for example, capybaras and tapirs. We can also observe white alligators and turtles, in the afternoon we arrive at our Lodge which is located in the Rio Tambopata then we settled in our respective rooms, then our lunch will be ready and after lunch e will take a short break to be ready to start our adventure in this part of the reserve. We will start by the afternoon to explore the flora and fauna where we will see different species that inhabit the Tambopata National Reserve and also we will have the opportunity to learn about Medicinal Plants, trees 600 years old Almendrillos (Dipteryx odorata, reaching up to 40 meters), chiguaguacos and lapunas, etc. also we can see differents types of monkeys, Birds, Reptiles Insects et.c then return to our Lodge where our delicious dinner will be ready and after dinner if you still have energy you and your guide can do a night walk to try to see the night wildlife.

DAY 05: CHUNCHO MACAW CLAY LICK.
This day we will leave early in the morning towards the Rio Tambopata with direction to the mouth of the river Malinowski, a place following The Tower point of control. Having gone through it, we will have the opportunity to visit a wildlife interpretation local center. Then we continue the trip, while we can see a change of scenery as the Tambopata river now flows faster and divided in many branches that create forested floodplain, lined with large pebble beaches islands. This is a perfect place to see capybaras, Orinoco geese, cormorants or alligators. After 3 hours of sailing, we reached the famous Chuncho Clay Lick! There, we find a good viewpoint to better observe this special and unforgettable show full of colors and sounds as flocks of parrots, macaws, parrots and other animals gather every morning to eat clay to help them digest and down the toxins contained in the fruits of some trees and jungle plants. Macaws arrive there between 5 and 9 am before flying to look seeds and fruits in the jungle. The first visitors are generally smaller species such as parakeets, parrots, and then produced only to be followed by significantly larger macaws representing an explosion of colors and sounds! When the Macaw show ends, we reboard our boat sailing downstream for 3 hours approx. until we return to our lodge for lunch then we prepare to go back upstream for about 2 hours until to get to our lodge where e will take our rooms and where we ill spend the last night in the Amazon Jungle. Also if you still have energy you can ask to our guide to do a last night walking to try to see more night life. This would be the end of the 5th day.

DAY 06: TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE – PUERTO MALDONADO CITY.
After the breakfast, we will leave the Tambopata National Reserve, taking the same route as we entered, and return to the Sandoval port on the Madre de Dios River. From there, we will take our boat back to Puerto Maldonado. You will collect your baggage in our office and then, we will transfer you either to the airport or the bus terminal. End of our services.
