Enjoy the Tambopata National Reserve for 4 days in the Amazon rainforest. Tambopata has a great environmental diversity, beautiful lakes, the macaw clay lick (Macaw Colpa) This reserve is one of the largest natural clay licks in the country with one of the highlights of the wildlife of Peru. Thousands of macaws and brightly colored parrots arrive daily at the cliffs to feed on mineral salts. Environmentalists claim that the great diversity of wildlife in TRZ is due to its location at the confluence of the Amazon lowland jungle with three other ecosystems. Here are at least 13 endangered species, including the jaguar, the giant otter, the ocelot, the harpy eagle and the giant armadillo.

Upon arrival to Puerto Maldonado, one of our guides will greet you at the airport or bus station and will bring you to our central office in downtown Puerto Maldonado. There you will be able to repack your bags and drop off luggage that you wont need during your stay at the lodge. We will depart from Puerto Capitania, the local port, and will travel downriver for 45 minutes by motor boat before reaching Port Sandoval, the entrance to Lake Sandoval and the Tambopata National Reserve. To get to Lake Sandoval, we will have to walk 3 Km or about an hour (muddy in the wet season) to arrive at a small port, from which we will take a row boat for 30 minutes in order to reach the Maloka Sandoval Lodge. Once we arrive, we will receive a warm welcome with a flavorful tropical juice and after a brief introduction to the lodge, we will rest in our comfortable rooms. Once the sun sets, we will take a night walk equipped with a flashlight or head lamp to search for the night monkeys (Musmuqui), frogs, snakes and insects that are active during the night. Afterwards, we will return to the lodge for a delicious dinner and to spend the night.

Very early in the morning, we will roe aroynd Lake Sandoval in a wooden canoe in search of the giant river otters (the biggest in the world), one of the most important protected species in the lake and considered flagship species. Giant otters live in small and very territorial family groups and feed on fish around the lake in the early morning. They can eat up to 4 kilos of fish a day. We will return to the lodge for breakfast and take a brief rest. After breakfast, we will leave the lodge and will go for a walk in the terra firme forest learning about the medicinal plants, diurnal mammals such as monkeys, wild cats, peccaries and birds such as toucans and macaws. We will also learn about the ecology of the Brazil nut tree or chestnut tree that is considered an umbrella species, as it helpit helps protect other flora and fauna that inhabit the region. We will return to the lodge for lunch and s short nap. In the afternoon, we will canoe aroun Lake Sandoval to look for monkeys (cappuccinos, squirrels and red howler), and various birds such as herons, kingfishers, cormorants, and shanshos that live and feed in the forest around the lake. In the evening, on our way back to the lodge, using our flashlingts we will be able to see the reflection of the eyes of the black caimans that usually hunt at night along the shore of the lake. We will approach them to take photos and we will take about their natural history. We will return to the Lodge for dinner and to spend the night.

We will get up very early to cross Lake Sandoval and walk about 20 minutes to visit the (Colpa de Palmeras). This is a special place where different species of parrots and parakeets and some macaws, such as the blue and yellow, scarlet red bellied and chestnut fronted macaws as well as yellow crowned, mealy and white bellied parrots gather to eat the dead wood of the palms trees, which is rich in salts and minerals (calcium, sodium, potassium, aluminum, magnesium and iron). This is a very important source of minerals that helps these birds with digestion and counteracts the toxins that they ingest from feeding on unripe fruit. We will return to the lodge for breakfast and a brief rest. After lunch, we will cross Lake Sandoval by canoe and visit the floodplain forest. We will wlk for aproximately 2 hours and will see enormous trees that are more than 200 years old, such as thw Shihuaahuaco (iron tree), Lupuna (kapok tree) and Oje (medical ficus tree); trees that grow only in this type of forest. We will return to the lodge for lunch and a brief siesta. In the afternoon, we will continue exploring the lake by canoe and will visit a 12 meters high tower that is located between the limit of the touristic area (2 Km.) and a refuge area (1 km) to watch the sunset. We will return to the Lodge for dinner and to spend the night..
