The trek from Salkantay to Machu Picchu 4 days, is the best alternative option to the Inca Trail, the famous Salkantay Trek (or Salkantay Trek), was named among the 25 best Treks in the world, by National Geographic Adventure Travel Magazine. It is a walk open to all, without limitations of spaces or permits (at least for now). An ancient and remote path located in the same region as the Inca Trail with snowy mountains and lush tropical forests, located northwest of the city of Cusco by the Vilcabamba Mountain Range and rising to 6271 masl. Salkantay is an outstanding mountain covered by snow turning it into a glacier and is adored for thousands of years by local people, Salkantay is a Quechua word that means wild mountain. Local Trekkers Peru, offers you the best staff (guides, cooks and porters), and the best camping equipment that will make this experience an unforgettable memory.
We are going to pick you up from your hotel from 4:30 to 5:00 am in the morning and then we will be travelling in our private transport for about 3 hours to Mollepata where you will have breakfast this first breakfast is not included in the price so you can order this breakfast in a local restaurant in Mollepata so in that way you can support loca businesses after that we take again the private transport for 30 minuts more until Challacancha (3700 masl = 12139 feet) where is going to start our trek.Is in this place where we are going to meet the horseman and his horses, who will be in charge of transporting our food and camping equipment. Then we have to walk for about 4 to 5 hours until to get Soraypampa where we will have lunch with a panoramic views of beautiful snow-capped mountains (Humantay; 4200 masl / 13780 feet and Salkantay; 6271 masl = 20575 feet) it is also in Soraypampa where it is going to be our first campsite (3800 masl / 11750 feet; the highest and coldest campsite of the trek) during the night time the temperatura can drop down until minus 5 degrees Celsius (Below Zero). Taking in the beautiful landscape along the way, in this day we will visit the beautiful Humantay Lake by the afternoon, which takes 1 hour 15 minutes walking to go and 1 hour to come back to Soraypampa our first Campsite.
We will have breakfast at around 5:30 am and begin our walk to the highest pass on this trek which is the Salkantay Mountain Pass (4630 masl / 15190 feet) located halfway between 2 huge mountains; Salkantay on the right and Tucarhuay on the left. From the pass, the views of the 2 snow-capped mountains are incredible. There is a possibility of snow here (during rainy season betwenn the months November to February only). This day it is going to be the longest and hardest day of the whole trek, we will walk for about 8 hours, It takes 4 hours uphill until to the Salkantay Pass, where your guide will perform a andean ceremony to say thanks to the Pachamama (Mother earth). After a rest, we will continue our walk (downhill) for another 2 more hours through a dramatic cloud forest towards Huayracmachay, where we will have lunch. We hike again after lunch in the direction of the start of the jungle for another 2 more hours, where we can see small stream, water falls, parrots, parakeets, humming birds, and orchics until we reach our second campsite, chaullay (2900 mals = 9514 feet).
After our delicious breakfast we continue the trek to Playa Sahuayacco we start walking through the upper jungle crossing the Lluskamayo River and a variety of little brooks until to reach Playa Sauayacco walking about 5 hours. Today we will pass through valleys and have wonderful views of waterfalls, also we can enjoy of tropical fruits, and observe plants such as palms, orchids, et. and as soon as we are at la Playa Sahuayacco we take a local car to get Hydroelectric station train, where it is going to be our last lunch spot, after lunch we have to continue walking 3 more hours by following the rail road to Aguas Calientes. Once in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town) we will check into our Hotel and after we settled in our hotel, we will have a dinner in a local restaurant, during this dinner your guide will give you a briefing for the visit to Machu Picchu the next morning. Note: This day instead to walk from Chaullay to Playa Sahuayacco, you can arrange with your guide to take a local transport to Santa Teresa to enjoy the Natural Hot Spring that this town has to offer you.
This day will be one of the most important and memorable days of your lives, because you will visit one of the greatest archaeological discovery of modern times (Machu Picchu) for which, after breakfast at your hotel, you need to walk up for about 1 h 40 min, (Bus up is optional) once in Machu Picchu your guide will explain you the story and the main places of Machu Picchu for about two hours and then is the end of your guide job then you will get free time to have plenty of time to explore Machu Picchu by yourself (you can climb Huaynapicchu mountain or Montana Machu Picchu) these excursions are optional you must let us know in advance if you want to climb up one of these mountains because spaces for these mountains are limited. After enjoying Machu Picchu you must go back to Aguas Calientes and wait for your train to Ollantaytambo, it takes 2 hours by train to Ollantaytambo where our transport will be waiting for you to take you back to Cusco. We leave you in your hotel or near to this. About the train, we will provide you the touristic class train, the train departure times can be in between 2:55 pm to 9:50 pm. it depends of the availability of the spaces.
